XContact is a simple adress book with a powerful search feature and
multiple links for yours contacts.
Installation
To install XContact, just copy it on your hard disk and place it where you like. The first time, XContact tell you he must create a data base for yours contacts.
All this data base is in a preference folder named “XContact ƒ”.
When you would backup your data base, simply backup this folder.
Getting Started
XContact is very easy to use
First, you need to setup yours preferences.
Open Preferences window in setup menu.
• “Urgent Group” is a group you can select by a click on the button SOS, for immediate call. We will see that later.
• With “Send Email” , you can choose your prefered e-mailer software that XContact use to send a mail.
• With “Web browser” , you can choose your prefered WEB Browser software that XContact use to go to an URL site adress.
In this version, XContact works properly with Netscape Navigator ™ or Eudora. I don’t try with another software.
You can choose the same software both to send a mail or browse an URL.
(Netscape Navigator ™ for example).
• “Auto Save” means that XContact don’t ask you for saving when you change something in a card.
• “Play Sound”, if used, the Sound linked with your curent card is played when you open it.
Click Ok to save yours preferences.
Create a Contact
To create a contact, click on the button “New Card” or select this item menu. Then, type your information in the fields.
• The format of the E-mail field is for example :
svilla@kagi.com
don’ t add “mailto”.
• Type your URL contact (if any) like this :
http://www.mygale.org/09/robby/Page.html
Remember that URL adresses are case sensitive, so type digit exactly
or paste it from your WEB Browser.
• You can add any special information in the scrollable text field with a limit of 512 chars and also link a document with each contact.
• Choose the group of your contact by select the Item in the pop-menu.
We will see group in the chapter Using Group.
Then Save your work by clicking on the save button or choosing the Item menu “Save Card”.
NB : if “Auto Save” in on, you don’t need to save because XContact do that for you. BUT , XContact don’t know if you did a mistake...
There is another way to add you contact in the DataBase :
Importing Data
You can import data from a formated text file.
Select the Item menu “Import...”.
Numbers in editable fields are position of words in the text file, an their name are field in the XContact DataBase.
The ASCII value is the value of the separator in the file to import
(for example 9 means ‘TAB’).
Example :
your text file is :
Name1 TAB Adress1 TAB Phone1 TAB Fax1 CR
Name2 TAB Adress2 TAB Phone2 TAB Fax2 CR
Namen TAB Adressn TAB Phonen TAB Faxn CR
You need to put :
1 in the Name Field, (of the Import Window)
2 in the Adress Field,
3 in the Phone Field,
4 in the Fax Field,
9 in the ASCII value Field,
and 0 in the Others.
Then choose “Import..” to select the formated text file.
NB : Every Import add data in XContact, so DON’T import two times the same file...
XContact can add Card with the an existing name.
But, when you do that, he ask you if you want add an existing name.
Searching a Contact
You can search a contact by :
• Name. It’s the First index.
• Town.
• Group.
To make a search, you have different possibilities :
• Use the alphabetic index on the left . (By tracking the cursor or clicking on a letter). The first card whose Name start by this letter will be displayed.
• Use an underlined word like “Name” , “Town”, “Group”.
In the little dialog, type the first letters of your search and click ok.
If you choose “Multi card search”, a list of all the cards with this letter will be open. So you could select a card with a click in this list or the key board. (up and down arrow key).
• The same dialog is also open by choosing the “Find icon” or by selecting
menu item “Find”, but only for the curent index.
The curent index is the last you have choose. You can see this index in blue.
(Name is the curent index when you launch XContact.
• You can also use the buttons First Card, Last Card, Prev Card and Next Card
(or the key PgDn, PgUp), to move in the Data base.
When your contact is found, you can call it by selecting the little phone icon (Frequency) and put your phone near the speaker of your Mac, send it a mail by using the mail icon or search it’s URL on the WEB by the same way.
You can also link a pict with your contact :
Select the pict area and paste your pict from the scrapt.
Your pict is resized to the size of the area, BUT, if you copy then this pict,
you found the original size ( before paste) in the scrapt.
Using Group
When you lauch XContact the first time, there are 4 groups defined.
Groups are a way to classify yours contacts. For example , Friends, Family, Customers, Providers …
• You can change the name of a group at anytime, or add a new group in the Window “Group Editor” by clicking in the list and edit the group name.
• The max number of group you can use is 32.
• In the preferences window you can select a special group called straight by the SOS button for a fast call.
Build Phone Book
XContact allow you to build a little phone-book with 16 pages and 240 phone numbers.
The format of this book is "credit card".
You will be able to build 2 books with only one page A4.
Open "Build Phone Book" window
The first time you have to ajust your printer,
because some printer are not able to ajust printing exactly at the center of the page
Printer Adjust (First time only)
• Open the "Printer adjust" window.
Verify your page Setup and print a page with "Verify".
• Get the value of T, B, L, R.
If T = B and L = R, you don't need to change the set up, else :
put the value of T, B, L, R (in cm) in the "Printer adjust" window.
Then print again and verify your ajust.
Print the book :
Return to "Build Phone Book" window
• Phase 1
Choose font and size (You can see a preview version and a pict for each phase.) of your book and run "Phase 1" . (Best result are made with a condensed font like "Helvetica ultra light")
• Phase 2
Rotate the page (top to bottom) and insert it again (on the same side) with the mark in "T" on the bottom.
• Phase 3
Rotate the page to print the back side (the "T" mark is back-bottom)
• Phase 4
Rotate the page again to print the same side (the "T" mark is back-top)
Now, you have a 2 books page...
Build the book :
• Phase 5
Cut you page in "AB" to have 2 equal parts. Each part is a single book.
• Phase 6
Look at the first "page" ("Page 1") of your book ( with the first name of your Data base in) and fold the part in "CD". You have to keep "Page 1" in front of you.
• Phase 7
Fold again in "EF" .
• Phase 8
Put 2 staples on "GH" and fold again.
• Phase 9
Cut around the book to free all pages.
Your book is ready. You can put it with your phone or credit card.
